BOWEN THERAPY
WHAT IS BOWTECH/BOWEN THERAPY?
Bowtech also known as the Bowen Technique or Bowen Therapy, is a very gentle, manual therapy that relies on the therapist performing light, subtle moves at specific locations on the body – like muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves, sending messages to the client’s nervous system about state of the body. The body may then start to respond to these messages, helping to balance the body and enhance well-being. Basically, Bowtech works by encouraging the body to balance or heal itself.

A TYPICAL BOWTECH/BOWEN THERAPY SESSION
The following details a typical Bowtech session:
- The client fills in an information sheet specifying their general health, muscle tension and consenting to Bowtech treatment
- The therapist selects the Bowtech procedures to perform based on the client’s history and presenting conditions
- The client is either lying down, sitting or standing. Most Bowtech moves are performed with the client lying down. The client may remain fully clothed if wearing light loose fitting clothing
- The therapist performs a few gentle moves, by drawing the skin slack, nudging up against the edge of the muscle, tendon or other structure and then rolling over the muscle/tendon
- The receptors of the muscle/tendon are engaged and a message is sent to the brain about the state of the body – the muscle is tight, the digestive system is not working optimally, the blood pressure is high etc
- The therapist waits several minutes before performing more similar moves. The waiting gives the body time to start processing the information that the brain has received – the muscle is tight I’m going to try and loosen it, the blood pressure is high I’m going to try and lower it etc
- More Bowtech moves are performed, followed by waiting time, until the chosen procedure is completed
- Once the session is complete the client will need to drink a lot of water, walk around to integrate the body changes and wait for the body to respond to the Bowtech messages over the following days
AFTER YOUR BOWTECH/BOWEN THERAPY SESSION
For your body to get the maximum benefit from Bowtech, it is recommended to do the following after your session:
- Walk – get up and walk around every half hour or so. This helps the body integrate the changes made.
- Water - drink lots of water – sip rather than gulp to allow the water to seep through your system. Water will flush waste products out of your body that have been activated during your Bowtech session.
- Wait – your body can continue processing the changes up to 10 days after the Bowtech session.
